Spear Phishing

Spear-phishing is a type of phishing attack that targets a specific individual, organization, or business.

Unlike phishing, which sends mass emails to random recipients, spear-phishing requires extensive research and personalization to make the message more convincing and appealing to the victim. Spear-phishing emails often appear to come from a trusted source, such as a friend, colleague, or reputable entity, and may contain information that only the victim would know.

The goal of spear-phishing is to trick the victim into revealing their sensitive information, such as passwords, bank details, or confidential documents, or installing malware on their device.

• According to a report by Barracuda, 50% of organizations surveyed were victims of spear phishing attacks in the last twelve months. The report also found that, on average, organizations receive five “highly personalized spear phishing emails per day"
• According to a report by Egress, around 65% of cybercriminals have leveraged spear phishing emails as their primary attack vector. The report also stated that almost 40% of breaches featured phishing, 11% involved malware, and around 22% involved hacking
• According to a report by Verizon, 94% of malware is delivered via email2. The report also revealed that phishing was the top threat action in breaches, accounting for 36% of incidents
• According to a report by Forbes, spear phishing is responsible for 66% of all breaches. The report also estimated that the average cost of a spear phishing attack was $1.85 million in 2023

What can you do

• Never share financial information, passwords, or any other sensitive data over phone, chat, or email. Do not click on links in emails, even if they appear to be from a trusted source
• Be careful of emails that claim to be from reputable organizations, such as banks, government agencies, or delivery services. They may use fake logos, names, or phone numbers to appear legitimate. If you are not sure about the authenticity of an email, contact the organization directly using their official website or phone number
• Beware of emails that create a sense of urgency or pressure you to act quickly. They may use words like “urgent”, “final notice”, “confirm”, or “verify” to make you feel anxious or curious. Do not let your emotions cloud your judgment and do not rush to follow any instructions in the email
• Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) for your online accounts, especially those that involve money or sensitive data. MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring you to enter a code or use a device to verify your identity when you log in. This can prevent hackers from accessing your accounts even if they have your password
• Keep your devices and apps updated with the latest security patches and antivirus software. This can help you detect and remove any malware that may have infected your devices through spear phishing or other means. You can also enable encryption and backup features on your devices to protect your data in case of theft or loss
